While the basketball season is beginning to reach its end, fans can start to look forward to the future of the virtual version of the sport. The 2K franchise has eclipsed EA's own NBA Live series to become one of the best selling games in the world. In fact, in February of this year, publisher Take-Two Interactive announced that the franchise was closing in on 90 million copies sold. Indeed, last year's entry was an excellent title and sold around 1.23 million units in the first week alone. While we don't know the exact title of the game, we'd imagine it'll stick with previous naming conventions and be known as NBA 2K20 or NBA 2K2020, the latter of which certainly seems a bit of a mouthful. We shouldn't have long to wait, as the games are usually announced in early June.
One rumoured feature though is an expansion of the game to also include female players. Atlanta Dream’s WNBA player Renee Montgomery recently tweeted a photo of her inside a scanning booth with the text “….cool to be scanned for the @NBA2K game…”. However the tweet was quickly deleted. This has led some to suggest that the next release of the game could include WNBA teams, something that rival NBA Live from EA Sports has already included for the last two years.
The future of the NBA is bright based on the rising young stars in the league. That includes this past year’s rookie stars Trae Young and Luka Doncic. Both of these guys seem like potential cover athletes as they are new additions in the NBA 2K19 Generation Next packs. However, the fanfare surrounding Doncic was pretty impressive in his debut season. Seeing the international star grace the cover of the United States game wouldn’t be a stretch. After all, Giannis hails from Greece and claimed 2K19’s cover. Luka is from Slovenia and should be an All-Star for many years during his upcoming NBA career. However, NBA 2K20 could go for the guy who many consider the biggest talent coming into the league since LeBron James. That is the expected No. 1 draft pick, Zion Williamson. The Duke Blue Devils star will go whichever team is holding the top pick in June’s draft. As of right now, it’s the New Orleans Pelicans so the 2K20 game could feature the NBA’s brightest new rookie front and center. With the amount of potential he has to take the game to a new level, it wouldn’t be surprising at all if Zion is this year’s “chosen one.”
While it would be great to see 2K Games do away with the game’s annoying micro-transactions, known as VC, they’re a cash cow. Expect Virtual Currency to make a return in NBA 2K20. 2K made some adjustments in NBA 2K19 (haircuts went back to being free and there were more opportunities to earn extra VC after games and via daily activities) so there’s a chance we get some improvements in this year’s entry. However, don’t be surprised when the predatory, pay-to-win model, rears its ugly head.
